Hymns about the Holy Spirit

Hymns about the Holy Spirit are mostly prayers: invitations for the Spirit to come, to fill, to teach, to comfort and to make Christ known. They take their pictures from Scripture — the dove, the wind, the breath of God, the tongues of fire at Pentecost.

They are the natural choice for Pentecost Sunday, seven weeks after Easter, and for confirmations, ordinations and services of renewal, but they suit any service where a congregation asks God to work among them. The most widely sung are listed first. All are in the public domain, so you may print or project them freely.

For a Pentecost service, many churches pair a hymn of invitation to the Spirit with readings from Acts 2 and John 14. Print several hymns at once with the button below, or add them to an order of service. Hymns marked “▶ Play along” have a free accompaniment if your usual musician is away.
