Hymns about creation

“The heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1), and hymns about creation join in. They praise God for the sky and the sea, the seasons and the harvest, and the care with which he made and keeps everything that lives — and they remind singers that the world is God's gift, not our possession.

Children love many of these hymns, and they are a natural fit for harvest and Thanksgiving services, outdoor and camp worship, a sermon on Genesis or the Psalms, or a creation-care Sunday. The most widely sung are listed first. All are in the public domain.

For an outdoor service, print the words in advance — screens and sunlight do not mix — and choose hymns with familiar tunes that carry without an organ. Hymns marked “▶ Play along” can be played from a phone through a small speaker. A creation hymn also makes a good opening for a children's talk: ask the children to listen for everything God made that the hymn names.
