Name Origin & Meaning
From 'abad' (to serve, to work) and 'Yah' (Yahweh), Obadiah declares devoted service to God as the defining characteristic of his bearer. The name was common in ancient Israel — at least thirteen men in the Old Testament bear it — reflecting how highly the concept of divine service was valued. The prophet Obadiah delivered the shortest book in the Hebrew Bible, but its message of divine justice against pride is timeless.

Biblical Significance
The prophet Obadiah wrote the shortest book of the Old Testament — twenty-one verses — pronouncing judgment on Edom for its treachery against Judah during the Babylonian invasion. Edom's pride, symbolized by its mountain fortresses, would be humbled. The book also promises Israel's ultimate restoration and the kingship of the LORD. A different Obadiah, governor of Ahab's house, hid one hundred prophets from Jezebel's persecution.
