Noah

נֹחַNoach
MaleOld TestamentHebrew
Rest, Comfort

Name Origin & Meaning

From 'nuach' (to rest, to be settled, to be at peace). Lamech named his son Noah saying: 'this one will comfort us in the toil and painful labor of our hands.' After the flood, the ark rested ('nuach') on Ararat — the very word of Noah's name enacted in geography.

First Biblical Appearance

Genesis 6:8
But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

The pivotal verse distinguishing Noah from his generation — the first instance of 'grace' (chen) in the Bible.

Biblical Significance

Noah was the righteous man who found grace in God's eyes in a generation of universal wickedness. He built the ark, survived the flood, received the rainbow covenant, and offered the first post-flood sacrifice. He is the ancestor of all living humanity. Peter calls the flood a type of baptism. Noah is listed in Hebrews 11 as a hero of faith.
