Judah
Name Origin & Meaning
From 'yadah' (to praise, to give thanks), Leah named her fourth son Judah saying 'this time I will praise the LORD.' The name became the source of the word 'Jew' and gave its name to the southern kingdom. Jacob's blessing places the royal and messianic scepter with Judah: 'the scepter shall not depart from Judah until Shiloh comes.'
First Biblical Appearance
“And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah.”
Leah's declaration of praise at Judah's birth — naming her son after the act of praising God.
Biblical Significance
Judah was the fourth son of Jacob and Leah. He suggested selling Joseph rather than killing him, then later pledged himself as surety for Benjamin before Joseph in Egypt — showing transformed character. Jacob's deathbed blessing assigns the royal and messianic line to Judah. All the kings of Israel from David onward, and Jesus of Nazareth, came from the tribe of Judah.
