Zebulun

זְבוּלוּןZevulun
MaleOld TestamentHebrew
Exalted Dwelling, Honor My Dwelling

Name Origin & Meaning

From 'zabal' (to exalt, to dwell with honor) and 'zevul' (elevated dwelling). Leah hoped Jacob would now dwell with her. Isaiah paired Zebulun with Naphtali in the prophecy fulfilled by Jesus' Galilean ministry, linking both tribes to the coming of the great light.

First Biblical Appearance

Genesis 30:20
And Leah said, God hath endued me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born him six sons: and she called his name Zebulun.

Leah names her sixth son expressing her hope for a dwelling of love with Jacob.

Biblical Significance

Zebulun was the tenth son of Jacob and sixth of Leah. His tribe settled the Jezreel Valley with access to Mediterranean trade. Jacob blessed him to dwell 'at the haven of the sea.' Isaiah 9:1 pairs Zebulun with Naphtali, fulfilled by Jesus' ministry. The tribe contributed 57,400 warriors and was praised in Deborah's song for extraordinary courage.
