From the Hebrew 'yonah,' the word for dove — a symbol of peace, gentleness, and in biblical poetry, longing. The dove released by Noah to find dry land, and the dove at Jesus' baptism, both carry the symbolism of new creation and divine presence. Biblical Significance
Jonah was a prophet from Gath-hepher in Zebulun who was commanded to preach repentance to Nineveh, capital of Assyria. He fled by ship, was swallowed by a great fish, prayed from its belly, was vomited onto the shore, and finally went to Nineveh — where the entire city repented. He then sat outside the city in anger, and God used a vine and a worm to challenge his narrow mercy. Jesus cited Jonah as a sign of his own burial and resurrection. Jonah is the only prophet for whom Jesus claimed a typological fulfilment.
