Habakkuk

חֲבַקּוּקHavaqquq
MaleOld TestamentHebrew
Embrace, Wrestler

Name Origin & Meaning

Derived from the Hebrew 'chabaq' (to embrace, to clasp), with a possible connection to an Akkadian plant name. The sense of embracing suggests one who clings — either to God or to the divine promise. Habakkuk's book is essentially a wrestling match with God: he questions, complains, and demands answers about theodicy, and receives the foundational answer of faith: 'the just shall live by his faith' (2:4), a verse that ignited the Protestant Reformation.

First Biblical Appearance

Habakkuk 2:4
Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

God's answer to Habakkuk's complaint about Babylon's pride — the verse that became foundational to Paul's theology of justification.

Biblical Significance

Habakkuk prophesied around 605 BC, wrestling with the question of why God would use wicked Babylon to punish Israel. His book is structured as a dialogue — the prophet complains, God answers, the prophet complains again, God answers again. It concludes with one of the most magnificent prayers in Scripture (chapter 3), ending with the declaration of joy in God even when all natural provisions fail. Paul quotes Habakkuk 2:4 in both Romans 1:17 and Galatians 3:11 as the foundation of justification by faith.
