Gabriel

גַּבְרִיאֵלGavriel
MaleOT & NTHebrew
God is My Strength, Strong Man of God

Name Origin & Meaning

From 'gever' or 'gibbor' (strong man, warrior) and 'El' (God) — 'God is my strength' or 'the strong man of God.' Gabriel is the divine herald whose appearances mark the most pivotal moments of redemptive history: the interpretation of Daniel's visions, the announcement of John the Baptist's birth, and the Annunciation to Mary. He carries good news that requires divine strength to receive.

First Biblical Appearance

Luke 1:19
And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

Gabriel's self-identification to Zacharias — declaring his standing before God as the source of his authority to deliver good news.

Biblical Significance

Gabriel is one of two named angels in Scripture. He appeared to Daniel twice to explain visions of the end times (Daniel 8 and 9), to Zacharias to announce John the Baptist's birth, and most famously to Mary to announce the Incarnation: 'You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.' He identifies himself as one who 'stands in the presence of God.' In Jewish and Islamic tradition he is the messenger angel par excellence.
