Zechariah

זְכַרְיָהZekharya
MaleOld TestamentHebrew
Yahweh Remembers

Name Origin & Meaning

From 'zakar' (to remember, to call to mind) and 'Yah' (Yahweh), Zechariah's name declares that God does not forget His covenant promises. In Hebrew thought, divine remembrance is never mere recollection — it is active, redemptive intervention. To say 'God remembered Noah' or 'God remembered Hannah' means God acted. Zechariah's visions are all about God actively remembering His scattered people and acting to restore them.

First Biblical Appearance

Zechariah 9:9
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass.

One of Zechariah's most celebrated Messianic prophecies, fulfilled in the Palm Sunday entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.

Biblical Significance

Zechariah son of Berechiah was a priestly prophet in the post-exilic period, contemporary with Haggai and prophesying 520–480 BC. His book contains eight night visions of extraordinary symbolic richness: the four horsemen, the four horns, the lampstand and olive trees, the flying scroll, the woman in a basket, and more. His messianic prophecies are the most detailed in the Old Testament: the King entering Jerusalem on a donkey (9:9), thirty pieces of silver (11:12–13), the pierced one (12:10), and the one-third refined by fire.
