Reuben
Name Origin & Meaning
From 'ra'ah' (to see) and 'ben' (son). Leah declared: 'the LORD has seen my affliction.' Reuben was Jacob's firstborn but forfeited his birthright through sin. He nevertheless showed moral complexity — attempting to save Joseph and offering his own sons as surety for Benjamin.
First Biblical Appearance
“And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.”
Leah's naming of her firstborn, weaving divine observation and her deepest personal longing.
Biblical Significance
Reuben was the firstborn of Jacob and Leah and lost his birthright by lying with Bilhah. Yet he tried to save Joseph's life and offered his sons as pledges for Benjamin. Jacob's deathbed blessing withheld the birthright from him — 'unstable as water, you shall not excel' — yet the tribe remained part of Israel.
