Levi

לֵוִיLevi
MaleOld TestamentHebrew
Joined, Attached

Name Origin & Meaning

From 'lavah' (to join, to attach, to accompany). Leah named her third son Levi hoping Jacob would be attached to her at last. The name found its fullest expression in the tribe's calling: while all Israel stood far off from the Tabernacle, the Levites were 'joined' to the priests in service at the threshold of God's dwelling.

First Biblical Appearance

Genesis 29:34
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.

Leah's naming of her third son, expressing her longing for Jacob's attachment and love.

Biblical Significance

Levi was the third son of Jacob and Leah and ancestor of the priestly tribe. Along with Simeon, he killed the men of Shechem in revenge for Dinah. Yet Phinehas, Aaron's grandson, earned the tribe an everlasting covenant of priesthood for his zeal. The Levites were set apart to serve at the Tabernacle. Their inheritance was not land but the LORD Himself (Numbers 18:20).
