Name Origin & Meaning
From the Hebrew 'yasha' (to save, deliver), Hosea shares its root with Joshua (Yehoshua) and Jesus (Yeshua). The name was originally borne by the last king of the northern kingdom and by Moses' aide, later renamed Joshua. The prophet Hosea's ministry of salvation was enacted in the most personal terms — God commanded him to love an unfaithful wife as a living parable of God's relentless love for unfaithful Israel.

Biblical Significance
Hosea prophesied in the northern kingdom of Israel in the eighth century BC. God commanded him to marry a woman named Gomer who proved unfaithful, and to love her still — making his marriage a living sermon on God's covenant faithfulness to adulterous Israel. His book introduced the language of divine love, steadfast mercy (hesed), and spiritual adultery that runs through the entire prophetic tradition. Paul quotes Hosea in Romans 9 regarding the inclusion of the Gentiles as God's people.
