Cain
Name Origin & Meaning
From 'qanah' (to acquire, to get possession). Eve exclaimed at his birth: 'I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.' The root also connects to 'smith' or craftsman, and Cain founded the first city. Paradoxically, the name of 'acquisition' belonged to the one who gained everything yet lost his very humanity through the first murder.
First Biblical Appearance
“And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.”
Eve's exclamation at the first human birth — a declaration of divine partnership.
Biblical Significance
Cain was the firstborn of Adam and Eve and the world's first murderer, killing his brother Abel out of envy. He was cursed to be a restless wanderer yet protected by the 'mark of Cain.' He built the first city and his line produced the first metalworkers, musicians, and herdsmen. The New Testament references him as a warning: 'not like Cain who was of the evil one' (1 John 3:12).
