Gad
Name Origin & Meaning
From 'gad' (fortune, luck) or 'gudud' (troop, raiding party). Leah named him 'Good fortune has come!' Jacob's blessing — 'A troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome at the last' — speaks of resilience that turns apparent defeat into final victory.
First Biblical Appearance
“And Leah said, A troop cometh: and she called his name Gad.”
Leah's exclamation of good fortune at Zilpah's son.
Biblical Significance
Gad was the seventh son of Jacob, born to Zilpah. The tribe chose to settle east of the Jordan in Gilead, sending warriors to help conquer Canaan before returning. They were known for outstanding soldiers — described as 'men of war fit for the battle' with faces like lions (1 Chronicles 12:8). The prophet Gad served as David's seer.
