Biblical Significance
Amos was a shepherd and fig-farmer from Tekoa in Judah who was sent to prophesy in the northern kingdom of Israel under Jeroboam II around 760 BC. He was the first of the writing prophets and introduced the prophetic tradition of social justice — denouncing the oppression of the poor, the corruption of the courts, and the hypocrisy of religious worship. His demand to 'let justice roll down like waters' (5:24) became one of Scripture's most quoted calls for righteousness.
