Hymn tune

MARION

MARION is a hymn tune in 6.6.8.6.10, composed by Arthur Henry Messiter (1834–1916) (1883). In a hymnal the tune has a name of its own, printed in capitals, because the same music carries many texts: any hymn written in its meter can be sung to it.

The four-part harmony played here comes from the Open Hymnal Project's public-domain edition (copied from "The Church Hymnal, Revised and Enlarged" (Episcopal), 1893 Ed. Messiter Hymn 520. Lyrics source: verses mixed from "The Hymnal" (Presbyterian) 1919, Hymn 583 alt. and from "Frank Leslie's Sunday Magazine, Volume 25" 1889 page 223.). Choose any text below and press play to hear the words sung to MARION, with the lines highlighted as they come — on organ, piano or guitar, in any key.
