Hymn tune
BELMONT
BELMONT is a hymn tune in Common Meter (8.6.8.6), composed by William Gardiner (died 1853) (1812). In a hymnal the tune has a name of its own, printed in capitals, because the same music carries many texts: any hymn written in its meter can be sung to it.
326 hymns in this library share its meter and can be sung to it.
The four-part harmony played here comes from the Open Hymnal Project's public-domain edition (Music and Lyrics source: "The New Hymnal (Episcopal)", 1916 Hymn 166. This hymn is essentially verses 6, 8-12 of the original. The original was intended as an Easter hymn (and could certainly still be used as such)). Choose any text below and press play to hear the words sung to BELMONT, with the lines highlighted as they come — on organ, piano or guitar, in any key.
