- 1Lord, as to Thy dear cross we flee,
- And plead to be forgiv'n,
- So let Thy life our pattern be,
- And form our souls for heav'n.
- 2Help us thro' good report or ill
- Our daily cross to bear,
- Like Thee to do our Father’s will,
- Our brother’s grief to share.
- 3Let grace our selfishness expel,
- Our earthliness refine,
- And kindness in our being dwell
- As free and true as Thine.
- 4If joy shall at Thy bidding fly,
- And grief’s dark day come on,
- We in our turn would meekly cry,
- "Father, Thy will be done."
- 5Should friends misjudge, or foes defame,
- Or brethren faithless prove,
- Then, like Thine own, be all our aim
- To conquer them by love.
- 6Kept peaceful in the midst of strife,
- Forgiving and forgiven,
- O may we lead the pilgrim’s life
- And follow Thee to heaven.
- 7Amen.
About this music
ST. BERNARD (RICHARDSON) — German. Setting: John Richardson, 1877.. The score is from the Open Hymnal Project, Music and Lyrics source: "The New Hymnal (Episcopal)", 1916 Hymn 125 the oldest copy of this arrangement that I can find is in "Church Hymnal", 1877 hymn 345 attributed to W. Richardson. It's then in the Scottish Hymnal of 1892 as John Richardson. I think the first was a misprint. I can't find a composer named W. Richardson in that era.; music and setting are in the public domain. The words above are from the hymnal cited on the Lord, as to Thy Dear Cross page.
