  1. 1It came upon the midnight clear,
  2. That glorious song of old,
  3. From angels bending near the earth
  4. To touch their harps of gold;
  5. "Peace on the earth, good will to men,
  6. From heaven's all-gracious King":
  7. The world in solemn stillness lay,
  8. To hear the angels sing.
  9. 2Still thro' the cloven skies they come,
  10. With peaceful wings unfurled,
  11. And still their heav'nly music floats
  12. O'er all the weary world;
  13. Above its sad and lowly plains
  14. they bend on hovering wing,
  15. And ever o'er its Babel sounds
  16. The blessed angels sing.
  17. 3And ye, beneath life's crushing load,
  18. Whose forms are bending low,
  19. Who toil along the climbing way
  20. With painful steps and slow,
  21. Look now! for glad and golden hours
  22. Come swiftly on the wing:
  23. O rest beside the weary road
  24. And hear the angels sing.
  25. 4For lo, the days are hastening on,
  26. By prophets seen of old,
  27. When with the ever-circling years
  28. Shall come the time foretold,
  29. When the new heaven and earth shall own
  30. The Prince of Peace their King,
  31. And the whole world send back the song
  32. Which now the angels sing.
  33. 5Amen.

About this music

CAROL — Richard Storrs Willis. Setting: "Order of worship for the Reformed Church in the United States", 1866.. The score is from the Open Hymnal Project, copied from "Order of worship for the Reformed Church in the United States", 1866 Hymn 63. supposed to be found in "Church Corals and Choir Studies" 1850 by Willis, but I don't see it in that book. some sources say 1850, some 1859, some 1861. Willis was editor for "The Musical World" magazine. Probably first appeared there.; music and setting are in the public domain. The words above are from the hymnal cited on the It Came Upon the Midnight Clear page.
