Yahweh Remembers

Name Origin & Meaning

The Greek form of the Hebrew 'Zechariah' (Yahweh remembers). The New Testament Zacharias, father of John the Baptist, had waited decades for God to remember his prayer for a child. When the angel appeared in the Temple, he was told that his prayer had been heard — an act of divine remembering that would trigger the entire chain of events leading to the birth of Jesus.

First Biblical Appearance

Luke 1:67
And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied.

Zacharias's spirit-filled prophecy at John's circumcision — released from nine months of silence into a flood of divine declaration.

Biblical Significance

Zacharias was an elderly priest who served in the Temple when the Angel Gabriel appeared to announce that his wife Elizabeth would bear a son named John. Because he doubted, he was struck mute until John's birth. At John's circumcision, he wrote 'His name is John' and immediately his tongue was loosed. He then prophesied the great Benedictus (Luke 1:68–79) — one of the New Testament's first hymns — declaring God's visitation and the dawning of salvation.
