Seth

שֵׁתShet
MaleOld TestamentHebrew
Appointed, Granted, Foundation

Name Origin & Meaning

From 'shith' (to place, to set, to appoint). Eve named him Seth because 'God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel.' The name speaks of divine replacement — the assurance that when one stream of God's purpose is cut off, He appoints another. Seth was the channel through which the messianic line flowed from Adam to Noah to Abraham to Jesus.

First Biblical Appearance

Genesis 4:25
And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel.

Eve's naming of Seth as divine replacement for Abel — the first expression of redemptive hope after tragic loss.

Biblical Significance

Seth was the third son of Adam and Eve, born after Abel's murder. His son Enosh marks the beginning of corporate calling on God's name: 'At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD' (Genesis 4:26). Seth's line produced Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, and Noah. Luke's genealogy of Jesus traces directly through Seth.
