Naphtali
Name Origin & Meaning
From 'pathal' (to twist, to wrestle) with the first-person suffix — 'my wrestling.' Rachel named him declaring: 'With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed.' The tribe's territory in Galilee was prophesied by Isaiah as the first to see the great light — fulfilled when Jesus began His ministry there.
First Biblical Appearance
“And Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali.”
Rachel's naming of her second surrogate son, framing it as a victory in her rivalry with Leah.
Biblical Significance
Naphtali was the sixth son of Jacob, born to Rachel's maidservant Bilhah. His tribe inherited the beautiful northern territory of Galilee. Isaiah 9:1–2 singles out 'the land of Naphtali' as the region where the great light would appear — fulfilled when Jesus made Capernaum the center of His Galilean ministry.
