The full form of the name later contracted to Jesus (via Greek 'Iesous'), Joshua is a compound of 'Yahweh' and 'yasha' (to save). Moses renamed his aide Hoshea to Yehoshua, adding the divine name — a theological progression from human-sourced to God-sourced deliverance.
