Ephraim
Name Origin & Meaning
From 'parah' (to be fruitful) with a dual suffix — doubly fruitful. Joseph named him Ephraim declaring: 'God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.' Jacob elevated Ephraim over firstborn Manasseh, and the tribe became dominant in the northern kingdom, so central that 'Ephraim' became a synonym for all of northern Israel in the prophets.
First Biblical Appearance
“And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
Joseph's naming of his second son, declaring fruitfulness even in exile.
Biblical Significance
Ephraim was the second son of Joseph, blessed by Jacob with the greater blessing despite being younger. His tribe became the most prominent in the northern kingdom. Joshua was from Ephraim. The Tabernacle at Shiloh was in Ephraim's territory for centuries.
