Name Origin & Meaning
Etymology uncertain; possibly from a Hebrew root meaning 'exalted' or 'mountain of strength,' or from an Egyptian root. Aaron's role as High Priest — head anointed with oil that ran down his beard and robes — makes the association with exaltation fitting. He stood at the apex of Israel's priestly hierarchy as mediator between people and God.

Biblical Significance
Aaron was the elder brother of Moses and first High Priest of Israel. He served as Moses' spokesman before Pharaoh, held up Moses' arms during battle, and officiated at the Tabernacle's inauguration. He made the golden calf — an act of tragic apostasy — yet was restored. He died on Mount Hor, his priestly garments transferred to his son Eleazar. The Aaronic blessing (Numbers 6:24–26) remains Scripture's most-used benediction.
