Mark

ΜάρκοςMarkos
MaleNew TestamentLatin
Of Mars, Warlike, Defender

Name Origin & Meaning

From the Latin 'Marcus,' derived from the Roman god of war Mars — suggesting martial strength and defense. Mark's story is one of failure redeemed: he abandoned Paul and Barnabas on the first missionary journey, causing a split between the apostles. Yet he became indispensable to Paul in his final imprisonment and is the human source behind what many scholars consider the first gospel written.

First Biblical Appearance

Acts 12:12
And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

Mark's first explicit appearance — his mother's house as the prayer hub of the Jerusalem church.

Biblical Significance

John Mark was the cousin of Barnabas and possibly the young man who fled naked from Gethsemane (Mark 14:51–52). His premature departure from the first missionary journey caused Paul and Barnabas to separate. Barnabas took him on a second journey; Paul eventually requested him back. Church tradition identifies him as Peter's interpreter and the author of the earliest gospel — an urgent, action-driven narrative peppered with 'immediately.' He is patron saint of Venice.
