Barnabas
Name Origin & Meaning
From the Aramaic 'bar' (son) and 'nebuah' (prophecy, consolation). The apostles translated his name as 'Son of Encouragement' — and his entire biography is an enactment of that name. He sold his field and laid the money at the apostles' feet. He vouched for the newly converted Paul when everyone else was afraid. He gave John Mark a second chance when Paul refused. Every great act of Barnabas is an act of generous encouragement.
First Biblical Appearance
“And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus.”
The introduction of Barnabas — a man so encouraging that his name itself was changed to reflect the gift.
Biblical Significance
Barnabas was a Levite from Cyprus, born Joseph, whose nickname from the apostles became his enduring identity. He introduced Paul to the Jerusalem church, joined him on the first missionary journey, and later parted with Paul over John Mark. His willingness to restore the disgraced John Mark proved prophetic — Paul later asked for Mark as 'useful to me for ministry.' Barnabas embodies the ministry of the second chance.
