Abel
Name Origin & Meaning
From 'hevel' (breath, vapor, mist) — the same word throughout Ecclesiastes for the fleeting nature of life. Abel's short life perfectly embodied the name: a breath, gone before barely beginning. Yet his blood 'cried out from the ground,' and Hebrews 11:4 says he 'still speaks' though dead. The vapor that vanished left the loudest echo in Scripture.
First Biblical Appearance
“And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering.”
Abel's act of worship that God accepted — the offering of the firstlings and fat, given in faith.
Biblical Significance
Abel was the second son of Adam and Eve, a shepherd whose offering God accepted. He was the first human to die and the first martyr. Jesus called him 'righteous Abel' (Matthew 23:35). Hebrews 11:4 makes him the first hero of faith, and Hebrews 12:24 contrasts his blood demanding vengeance with the blood of Jesus speaking forgiveness.
