Tamar
Name Origin & Meaning
From 'tamar' (a date palm tree), associated with uprightness, strength, beauty, and fruitfulness. The Song of Solomon compares the beloved to a palm tree for her stature. Despite the complexity of her story, Tamar's name suggests a woman of remarkable moral uprightness who secured what was rightfully hers by covenant.
First Biblical Appearance
“And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.”
Tamar's first appearance as the wife of Er, before the complex covenant events that follow.
Biblical Significance
Two Tamars appear in Scripture. The first is Tamar daughter-in-law of Judah, who disguised herself to obtain from Judah the covenant son she was owed, bearing Perez — in the genealogy of Jesus. The second is Tamar daughter of David, violated by her half-brother Amnon. Both stories involve deep injustice and courageous survival. Both appear in Matthew's genealogy.
