Samuel
Name Origin & Meaning
Scholars debate between 'shama' (heard) and 'El' (God) — 'God has heard' — and 'shem' (name) plus 'El' — 'His name is God.' Both interpretations are theologically apt. Hannah's prayer was heard by God, and the child born of that prayer carried in his name a testimony to divine responsiveness. Samuel's entire ministry was characterized by hearing and communicating the voice of God.
First Biblical Appearance
“Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.”
Hannah names her son at his birth, making his name both a testimony and a vow fulfilled.
Biblical Significance
Samuel was the last judge of Israel and the first of the great prophets after Moses. Born to the barren Hannah after fervent prayer, he was dedicated to the Lord and raised in the Tabernacle under Eli. God called him as a child with the words 'Samuel! Samuel!' — and he became the prophet through whom God's word came to all Israel. He anointed both Saul and David as kings, establishing the prophetic role of anointing leadership. His intercession for Israel was so significant that Jeremiah and Ezekiel later paired him with Moses as Israel's greatest intercessors.

May you hear your name called in the night and, like Samuel, answer: 'Speak, LORD, for your servant listens.' May your life be a testimony that the God who opens barren wombs also opens deaf ears and calls the young into prophetic purpose.
